From common knowledge and personal experiences, most people come to know bees as pests. A majority of the population is either deathly afraid of bees, annoyed by bees, or allergic to bees, and this is upsetting because bees are a huge part of the ecosystem. A report done revealed that bees pollinate nearly 35% of the world’s food supply. Pollination done by bees is important for plant reproduction, which allows us to keep producing foods such as tomatoes, eggplant, cucumbers, nuts, seeds, and plenty more food items that are essential in our diets. In a report done in April of 2016, beekeepers claimed to have lost 44% of their bees in a span of 1 year(https://beeinformed.org/2016/05/10/nations-beekeepers-lost-44-percent-of-bees-in-2015-16/).  Most likely the drop is caused by the increased use of pesticides and insecticides on crops. This increased usage of insecticides can lead to a grave future not only for the bees, but our food supply as well. Recently, Cheerios pulled their mascot, Buzz Bee, off of their cereal box to emphasize a need for a change. In a twitter post, Cheerios said, “Buzz Bee is off the box to help his pollinator friends who are in trouble. Join the mission to #bringbackthebees!”  Back in 2015, CNN posted a 5 step guideline to get involved in helping save the bee population to ensure that our food system stays regulated. Here’s a link to the 5 steps you can follow to help save the bees! http://www.cnn.com/2015/03/04/living/iyw-5-ways-to-help-bees/

Official Cheerio twitter post from March 15, 2017, that confirmed that mascot, Buzz Bee, would no longer be featured on Cheerio cereal boxes.

According to CNN, nearly 90% of America’s food supply depends on the pollination process done by bees on crops.
